Daniel Hernandez Romero, who is originally from Nicaragua and grew up in Costa Rica, came to Berlin three years ago to be with his wife and daughter. He started working as a Lieferando courier in December 2021 to improve his German and support his family. His job gives him the opportunity to see historical places in Berlin, which is just one of the reasons why he likes to work as a courier.
Meet Daniel
Daniel enjoys meeting people and learning more about German culture. And while the language can be a barrier, Lieferando helps him to be more confident. “For example, speaking with people when I’m at a restaurant, asking how long the order will take, it helps me to learn and not be afraid of the language anymore”.
The language wasn’t the only thing Daniel had to adjust to when moving to Berlin. Coming from a place without bike paths, he was sometimes a bit nervous about riding a bike in such a big city. “But then I realised that I’m driving past all of these historical places in Berlin”.
For Daniel, working as a courier and exploring his new home is his way to launch his career in Germany. Despite his previous experience and having studied tourism, he explains that it’s hard to find a job as a hotel director without speaking the language. But Lieferando makes him feel like he’s still part of the same industry. “It makes me feel like I still work in the restaurant area. When I go to restaurants, sometimes I check the menu or watch the people work. I like it”. His goal is to stay at Lieferando and apply for internal jobs that will further his career.
While working towards his goal, Daniel likes that he can work as a courier in the evenings, enjoy time with his daughter during the day and still find time for his hobbies. “I started playing the guitar and I do a lot of sports”, he says and explains that he likes this flexibility that comes with his job.
